PARIS — Records for heat and dryness tumbled across Western Europe during April, national weather services said on Monday, as warm air from Africa combining with the effects of a changing climate drove up temperatures and reduced rain.

German officials said that April was the eighth consecutive month of higher- than-normal temperatures, while the French national weather service observed that April marked the thirteenth straight month of unusually warm conditions.

“The sustained period of above-average temperatures across a number of countries is undoubtedly linked to global warming,” said Patrick Galois, a forecaster at Meteo France. In France May, June and July are also expected to be warmer than the seasonal average, he said.

The British Met Office said last week that April – and the 12 months ending in April – were set to be the warmest for nearly 350 years, when records, known as the Central England Temperature, started to be kept.

Definitive figures are to be released on Tuesday, Met Office spokesman said.

In Italy, Luca Ciceroni, a meteorologist for Sky Italia’s 24-hour news channel, said in a telephone interview that the month will likely end up the hottest April on record.

Across much of Europe tourists and shoppers took advantage of another weekend of balmy weather.

In central Paris the sidewalks were chockablock with pedestrians on Monday afternoon, when fine and bright conditions resumed after thunderstorms late on Sunday.

Frankfurt took on a Mediterranean air as terraces, patios and outdoor dining tables around town overflowed with people.

Elsewhere, however, there was mounting unease about the effects of an early and sustained heat wave.

In the north of France, where the unseasonable warmth has struck hardest, farmers are irrigating more than usual, raising the prospect of water shortages if hot and dry conditions continue.

French wine makers also could face difficulties if a sudden cold snap ruins vines that matured unseasonably early.

German farmers already are complaining about devastation from the dryness.

“If there is no stable rainfall in the next ten days, we are facing a crop failure for barley, wheat and sugar beets,” Michael Lohse, a spokesperson for the German Farmers’ Association, told the most recent edition of Focus magazine. He warned of rising beer prices later in the year.

In some parts of Germany, authorities are advising citizens not to light so-called Walpurgisnacht fires, set each year to mark the coming of spring, because the dry and brittle conditions raise the risk of forest fires.

Germany scored a springtime hat-trick, with April setting records in all three of those categories – a first since comparable records began in 1901.

The average monthly temperature across Germany was 11.7 degrees or 4.4 degrees above normal, beating a previous record of 10.6 degrees set in 1961.

The sun shone for 283 hours, about 80 percent more than the average for April. The previous sunniest April on record was 1968, when 217 hours of sunshine were logged.

In the Rhineland, in the western part of Germany, there were 15 days of temperatures above 25 degrees, more than during an average July. It was exceptionally dry; rainfall was only 7 percent of the normal level for the month.

In Karlsruhe, a city in the southwestern part of Germany near the French border, and Giessen, a city north of Frankfurt, there was no rain at all recorded as the month was closing, and none was expected on Monday evening.

In France, it was the hottest April in at least a century, according to Galois of Meteo France.

Lille and Reims, in northeastern France, had not received a drop of rain during the entire month of April and Galois said none was expected on Monday night.

Average afternoon temperatures in the south of France were about four degrees above normal during April, and about seven degrees above normal in northern parts of the country.

Records for daily temperatures were set in Lille, where it reached 28 degrees on April 15, and in the southern town Orange, where it was 30 degrees on April 24.

Strasbourg, near the French-German border, received double the usual amount of sunshine during April while parts of the country basked under the sunshine for a daily average of 11 hours and 30 minutes – the maximum possible for the time of the year.

Ciceroni, of Sky Italia, said that several surveys showed that in the north and much of central Italy, the temperature in April was 6 to 7 degrees warmer than the historic average.

Temperatures “are exceptionally mild for April”, Austria’s ZAMG meteorological centre said, reporting a record 32 Celsius (90 Fahrenheit) in the northern region of Lower Austria.

The centre said the main reason for the summer weather gracing the region was a strong southern wind from Africa’s Sahara desert.

Temperatures hovering around 28 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) in Vienna drew large crowds to the banks of the Danube while Germany’s Bild carried front-page pictures of Berlin residents sunbathing in 30 degrees.

Prague experienced its hottest April 28 in 212 years, with mercury hitting 27.7 Celsius (82 Fahrenheit) while unusually-high temperatures were also recorded in Poland and Slovakia.

2012 Likely to Reach Record High Global Temperature, according to NASA
NASA’s Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) just posted a recap of the summer of 2010. Along with that, they also made some predictions about the global temperatures for 2011 and 2012.

As many of you already know, the summer of 2010 was the 4th warmest on record, according to GISS records, which date back to 1880. The summer of 2009 was the second warmest.

According to GISS, the reason 2010 was a bit cooler than 2009 was the recent transition to a moderate La Nina.
GISS also points out that Antarctica was unusually cold for the winter months of 2010, while the winter of 2009 was relatively mild. Antarctic temperature anomalies fluctuate chaotically from year to year, so this is not unusual according to GISS.
Other key statements from the NASA GISS press release……….
…the temperature anomaly in one place in one season has limited relevance to global trends. Unfortunately it is common for the public to take the most recent local seasonal temperature anomaly as indicative of long-term climate trends.
This does not mean that local anomalies are unrelated to global trends, but it is necessary to look at statistics.
8 of the last 10 summers were warmer than the 1951-1980 mean in the United States and Japan, and 10 of 10 in Europe. So if you are perceptive and old enough, you should be able to notice a trend toward warmer seasons.
—–

The above map provides an indication of the likely effect of the current cooling trend on the rank of the 2010 calendar year temperature anomaly. The maps compare January-August temperature anomalies for 2010, 2005 (the warmest year in the GISS analysis), and 1998 (one of the warmest years in the GISS analysis, the temperature being boosted by the “El Nino of the century”). 2010 is clearly the warmest of these years for the first eight months. However, the above map shows that the monthly anomalies in 2010 have declined steadily over the past five months as the Pacific Ocean moved into the La Niña phase. The last four months of 2005 (green line) were unusually warm, so it is not possible to say yet whether 2005 or 2010 will be the warmest calendar year in the GISS analysis. It is likely that the 2005 and 2010 calendar year means will turn out to be sufficiently close that it will be difficult to say which year was warmer.
———
Projections of trends over the next few years are possible based on the following considerations: (1) the planet is out of energy balance by at least several tenths of one W/m2 due to the rapid increase of greenhouse gases during the past few decades, as confirmed by measurements of changing ocean heat content, (2) inertia of energy systems that assures continuing growth of atmospheric CO2 by about 2 ppm per year for the next few years, (3) expectation that the solar irradiance will climb out of the recent long-lasting solar minimum, as shown in Figure 5, (4) model projections suggesting that the current La Niña may bottom out near the end of 2010. Given the dominant effect of El Niño-La Niña on short-term temperature change and the usual lag of a few months between the Nino index and its effect on global temperature, it is unlikely that 2011 will reach a new global record temperature.
In contrast, it is likely that 2012 will reach a record high global temperature.
Given the association of extreme weather and climate events with rising global temperature, the expectation of new record high temperatures in 2012 also suggests that the frequency and magnitude of extreme events could reach a high level in 2012.
—-
I wonder if they also watched a certain recent Hollywood disaster movie or a particular calendar in regards to the above underlined statement. Brett.

As a reporter and analyst on the extreme weather and climate change beat, I’ve found this summer to be dizzying, with too many extreme events and broken records to count, let alone write about. First it was the heat, then the wildfires, and now the ever-expanding drought that seems intent on swallowing the entire country and kicking off a global food crisis. Oh, and there has been more extreme heat. On Friday, in fact, several states in the High Plains were under heat watches and warnings, but they’re used to that by now. After all, this is the summer of sweat. It’s also a summer that offers a vivid and disturbing preview of what’s to come as a result of manmade global warming.

I’ve compiled some of the most impressive temperature records that I gathered from the National Weather Service’s labyrinthine network of websites, and will be updating this weekly as the summer continues. I plan to add noteworthy precipitation records to the Extreme Planet blog as well.

National:

The U.S. recorded its warmest January-to-June period on record and its warmest 12-month period.

The warm June followed the warmest spring on record, which was the culmination of the warmest March, third-warmest April, and second-warmest May. This marks the first time that all three months during the spring season ranked among the 10 warmest, since records began in 1895.

In June, said NOAA scientists, the average daily temperature for the lower 48 states was a full 2.0°F above the 20th-century average.

The U.S. Climate Extremes Index, which tracks the highest and lowest 10 percent of extremes in temperature, precipitation, drought and tropical storms/hurricanes, was a record-large 44 percent during the January-to-June period. That was more than twice the average value, driven largely by warm daily high and warm overnight low temperatures.

During June, there were at least 3,282 daily record high temperatures broken or tied, and at least 1,955 records for warmest overnight low temperature. Of these records, 645 were monthly records, and 173 were all-time temperature records.

Sidney Municipal Airport in Nebraska did its part to add to the daily record total by breaking or tying an impressive 20 daily temperature records during June, out of a possible 63 such records during the month.

Through July 18, there have been 3,369 record daily highs broken or tied, and 2,456 record warm overnight low temperature records set or tied. Of these, 349 have been monthly records, and 197 have been all-time records.

In a long-term trend that demonstrates the effects of a warming climate, daily record-high temperatures have recently been outpacing daily record lows by an average of 2-to-1, and this imbalance is expected to grow as the climate continues to warm. According to a 2009 study, if the climate were not warming, this ratio would be expected to be even. However, you’ll notice that shorter time periods will have much more lopsided ratios, including this year when daily record highs are outnumbering daily record lows 9-to-1. Or, when you look at all warm temperature records, including overnight low temperatures compared to all cold temperature records, the ratio is closer to 7-to-1.

State-by-State:

On a state-by-state basis, Colorado set the highest number of daily high temperature records during June, with 343, followed by Texas (337) and Kansas (230). Tennessee set the most all-time records in June, with 27, followed by Colorado (23) and Kansas (21). In Colorado, June 2012 was the warmest June on record, with temperatures averaging 6.4°F above average. Seven other Western states had a top 10 warm June.

A scientific panel known as the U.S. State Climate Extremes Committee is reviewing a temperature reading of 113°F in South Carolina, and 112°F in Georgia, to determine if they qualify as the warmest temperature ever recorded in those states.

Curious about some of the noteworthy records set in U.S. cities? Here’s a brief city-by-city rundown. (You can also explore these records and more using Climate Central’s Record Temperature Tracker.) More to come I’m sure…

Budapest is the second hottest capital in the world, after Bagdad, according to Index.hu. The report continues to say the Carpathian Basin and surroundings is now an extremely uncomfortable place. Bucharest is around 35, Bratislava is 33, and Zagreb 32 degrees respectively. These figures are much higher than in Western Europe, in Paris and Lisbon they measured 27 degrees 24 degrees. Only Madrid and Brussels could rival Europe’s eastern half with 32 and 35 degrees Celsius.

Taken together, the situation is that now Europe is about as hot as Africa, traditionally considered as the hottest continent. In South Africa, Pretoria it’s 19, but further north in Sudan, Khartoum is 34, in Somalia, Mogadishu is only 24, and in Libya, Tripoli was 36 degrees at the time of the report.

The heat record here was smashed on Monday in Budapest with a high of 37.3C recorded. The peak temperature in the capital prior to that was measured as 35.7C on the same day in 1950. The Hungarian national record was 38C in Orosháza in 1905, this was also shattered on Monday with 38.4C recorded in Túrkeve. Weather forecasts suggest scattered thunder storms for later today or tomorrow, lets see.
